Inspection Robotic UGV Platform and the Procedure for an Acoustic Signal-Based Fault Detection in Belt Conveyor Idler

Belt conveyors are commonly used for the transportation of bulk materials. The most characteristic design feature is fact that thousands idlers supporting moving belt. One critical elements idler rolling element bearing, which requires monitoring and diagnostics to prevent potential failure. Due number be monitored, size conveyor, risk accident when dealing with rotating belts, all (i.e., using vibration sensors) impractical regarding scale connectivity. Hence, an inspection robot proposed capture acoustic signals instead vibrations in condition monitoring. Then, signal processing techniques pre-processing analysis check idler. It has been found even if damage signature identifiable captured signal, it hard automatically detect fault some cases due sound disturbances caused by contact belt joint coating. Classical based on impulsiveness may fail such a case, moreover, they indicate good condition. application can “replace” classical measurement done maintenance staff, improve safety during inspection. In this paper, authors show detection bearings installed conveyor possible, presence significant amount background noise. Influence disturbance minimized appropriate methods.
